Johnson Remodel

Opportunity

One client adored their charming Craftsman home in Seattle's Greenlake neighborhood. It had many qualities they loved: character, history, and a fantastic location. However, their kitchen had become a point of daily frustration. Dark, closed off from the dining room, and lacking sufficient counter space, it had long ago ceased to meet their family's needs.

After my initial conversations with the couple and a review of their home, it became apparent that their kitchen was essentially functioning as a one-person workspace in a family that deeply values togetherness. Limited counter space and poor flow created unnecessary separation during what should be the most connective moments of their day: preparing and sharing meals.

Results

By honoring the home's Craftsman character while improving its functionality, the renovation created a space that supports the family’s values of togetherness, communication, and shared experiences. The kitchen now facilitates, rather than hinders, the family rituals that strengthen their relationships. Most importantly, the redesigned space will grow with them through different life stages, from family meals with young children to entertaining friends as their social circle expands and, eventually, creating new memories as their family evolves.
