My #1 Advice When Considering a Remodel

Let’s imagine for a moment that you’ve decided you’re ready to start that kitchen or bathroom remodel, maybe even adding an entire addition. What’s the first thing you think of? If you guessed ‘how much is it going to cost’ you’re correct. Of course, that’s important and critical to know, but how can you possibly arrive at that number if you haven’t done a little daydreaming?My #1 advice to clients is to dream about the possibilities of your new space. Who cares how much it’s going to cost at this stage, all I want to know is what do you really want! What do you want it to look and feel like? What value will it add to your home? Not just monetarily but emotionally? What pain point will it relieve when completed? What will make you happy?I’m sure many of you are thinking, yeah but Melinda if I do all this dreaming only to realize I can’t afford it, won’t I just be disappointed? Maybe, but there are always ways in which you can value engineer a look without compromising the whole dream. And isn’t it better than getting to the end of the remodeling project and being disappointed because you assumed you couldn’t afford a certain look?If you’ve never done a remodeling project, you don’t know what you don’t know. You make assumptions about style and cost.   • The end result will be based on facts, not fantasy. 
  • You’ll gain clarity and discover what is really important to you about your project.
  • Less is more. Not everything has to be over the top to create a beautiful and successful project. Some of the most beautiful projects are ones that are done with low and high-cost items.
  • There will be no regrets at the end of construction. You’ll know that everything was selected purposefully.
  • Who knows, maybe you’ll discover that you can have everything you wanted. If you don’t dream it, you won’t know if it was possible.
